Osteopathy is a complementary manual medicine and was developed by the doctor and philosopher Andrew Taylor Still in the 18th century. One of his students, Little John, brought the osteopathic concept to Europe in 1920. Osteopathy includes the areas of the musculoskeletal system, the visceral system and the entire nervous system and its envelope structures.
Osteopathy counts to the arts of healing in Germany. Only medical practitioners (such as medical doctors and “Heilpraktiker”) are allowed to perform Osteopathy by themselves. Physiotherapists may apply osteopathic techniques as long as they are tied to the field of physiotherapy. They need a private prescription by a physician or “Heilpraktiker”.
